Eragon Shadeslayer was the main protagonist in the Inheritance Cycle. He was the son of Brom and Selena. After the dragon Saphira hatched for him, Eragon became the first Dragon Rider to be born in a hundred years and was subsequently trained by Brom and later Oromis. After becoming an accomplished swordsman and magician in a relatively short time, the young rider found himself championing the cause of the Varden, inheriting both the duties of the Dragon Riders and his father's place as Galbatorix's foremost enemy.
Arya was an elf whom succeeded her late mother, Queen Islanzadí, as the queen of the elves as well as the bonded Dragon Rider of the green dragon Fírnen. Her father was the late King Evandar. Arya was stunningly beautiful, with long raven-black hair and slanted green eyes. She was also a master swordswoman and magic user.

Roran Garrowsson, nicknamed "Stronghammer", was a human hero during the final years of the war against Galbatorix. The son of Garrow, he was a first cousin to both Eragon and Murtagh. He was about two years older than Eragon, but they were both so close, however, that they considered each other brothers.

Brom Holcombsson was a male human, a former Dragon Rider, the father of Eragon Shadeslayer, love of Selena, and the founder of the Varden.

Murtagh Morzansson was a male human who championed the cause of the Empire. He was the son of Morzan, the man who betrayed the Dragon Riders to Galbatorix and helped destroy them, and Selena, Morzan's Black Hand and the most feared of all the Empire's spies and assassins. In addition to being a Dragon Rider he was also the Empire's strongest magician after Galbatorix, the Empire's general and champion, the only known child of a member of the Forsworn, and one of the three principal characters in the Inheritance cycle. Murtagh was also a Kingkiller.

Galbatorix was the king of Alagaësia by force. He was chosen by a dragon and became a Rider in his early years. His dragon Jarnunvösk was killed by Urgals some years later. Galbatorix, mad with grief and hatred, asked the Dragon Rider council to grant him another dragon, but they refused, sensing his mental instability. With his request denied, Galbatorix took it upon himself to steal another dragon egg. He convinced a Dragon Rider named Morzan to leave the gates open to the place where the eggs were stored. Galbatorix stole a dragon. Then, he forced this dragon, Shruikan, to serve him by dark magic. He formed the Forsworn, a group of thirteen dragon riders and their dragons loyal only to him, and killed all the other dragons and riders in existence, or so he thought. He proceeded to create an Empire through which he ruled most of Alagaësia. He is the main antagonist of the series.

Angela was a witch and herbalist. She owned a shop in the city of Teirm, but, as an ally of the Varden, she spent considerable time with the rebels in Farthen Dûr and in Surda. She was often accompanied by a werecat named Solembum. She said that she liked to be wherever big events were happening. Angela's past is largely a mystery. She claimed to be older than she looked, and Oromis speculated that she had stayed in Du Weldenvarden at some point in her life. However, it is never made entirely clear if she is human or not. Angela had the uncanny ability of showing up wherever significant events were taking place.

Oromis Thrándurin, known as Osthato Chetowä, The Mourning Sage, and Togira Ikonoka, The-Cripple-Who-Is-Whole, was an ancient elf, and a Dragon Rider who trained Brom, Morzan, and later Eragon. He was a philosopher and a logician, and was bonded to a golden male dragon named Glaedr.

Orik was a male dwarf, the son of Thrifk and of Hrothgar's youngest sister, later being adopted by Hrothgar himself. He was a member of the Dûrgrimst Ingeitum (clan of smiths), an ally (and foster brother) of Eragon, and at the time of the Rider War the 43rd king of the dwarf clans. As king, he was the wielder of Volund.
